Caelan Doris Included in Irish Team But Joe McCarthy Omitted

Ireland rugby squad announcement update

Returning head coach Andy Farrell has named captain Doris in his Ireland squad for the autumn internationals, but Joe McCarthy misses out.

The captain, absent from play since undergoing shoulder surgery in the start of May, has come back to provincial training, but it remains unclear whether he will be ready to face the All Blacks in the US on 1 November.

Second row Joe McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot injury he sustained during the first British and Irish Lions match against Australia in the summer.

Ulster forward Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province winger Calvin Nash also miss out because of injury, while full-back Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing hip surgery after the summer tour.

Leinster prop Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only new member in the 34-man group, however the Irish Rugby Football Union states uncapped provincial pair Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped Connacht wing Bolton will head to Chicago as "reserves".

After playing the New Zealand at Soldier Field in a rematch of their previous meeting, Ireland will play Japan, Australia and world champions the Springboks in Dublin.

"There's an exciting look to the panel and it's a chance for the more experienced members and for the newcomers on the summer tour to Georgia and the Lobos," said Farrell, who returns to national team duties after taking a sabbatical to coach the British and Irish Lions to Australia.

In a largely familiar-looking selection, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Crowley will once again vie for the first-choice fly-half position. The number 10 jersey is remains available, with Prendergast and Crowley set to play against each other for the first occasion in the upcoming URC game at the Dublin venue.

Ciaran Frawley is the third number 10 selected as Farrell deciding not to calling up Leinster's Harry Byrne.

At number 9, the Ireland boss has picked Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who captained Ireland to the summer international victories over Georgia and Portugal. Additionally, there is a recall for the western province's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to teammate Murphy.

Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an experienced cohort of centre options. Osborne is another option in the centres, but the 23-year-old is also a frontrunner to deputise for the full-back at number 15.

Wingers James Lowe, Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are included. The winger impressed on his national team debut over the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over the Lelos and Portugal.

Paddy McCarthy is the sole new addition in the Ireland forwards. The front rower has started two of his province's URC United Rugby Championship games so far and featured in the second string's loss by the English in the English city previously.

McCarthy was included in caretaker coach O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not earn a cap.

Munster second row Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those Tests, is kept in the squad, while veteran Ulster lock Henderson returns after missing the summer tour.

Conan, who played in each of the Lions matches over the summer, is poised to deputise for the captain if the captain fails to recover full fitness in time to play New Zealand.

The Ireland squad will assemble in Dublin on the start of the week before flying to Chicago on Tuesday.
