Labuschagne Omitted from Australian One-Day International Team Against India
Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from Australia's three-game ODI series versus India, as in-form Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw earning a surprise call-up.
Recent Form Result in Exclusion
Selectors dropped Labuschagne from the one-day international team after managing only a single run in both of his innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. He has a top score of 47 in his previous ten ODI batting appearances.
The batsman has featured in 68 one-day internationals and accumulated 1,871 runs at an average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now work towards a Test recall ahead of the Ashes starting in Perth on 21 November.
Surprise Inclusion and Other Squad Changes
There have been indications of a return to form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw also hit a hundred for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.
The left-hander may to make his white-ball international debut in the forthcoming series against India after his last inclusion in an ODI squad in 2022.
The left-hander has played 14 Tests with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also seeking a red-ball recall as Australia look for a answer to their top-order woes.
Bowling Additions and Injury News
Fast bowler Mitchell Starc returns for the ODI series against India after having time off since performing well for Australia in the whitewash of West Indies in July.
Big Bash star Mitch Owen may earn his ODI debut after sustaining a head injury in the lead up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.
Skipper Pat Cummins is still unavailable as he hopes to heal from a spinal issue in time to captain Australia in the opening Test of the Ashes in November.
Team Announcement Strategy and Fixtures
Australia have announced a squad for only the initial two T20 matches against India with the Ashes approaching, although Glenn Maxwell will sit out the five-match series due to a wrist problem sustained in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 sides after smashing a century in the final game against New Zealand to clinch a two-nil victory last week.
“We have named a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be some management through the later stages of the series as individuals prepare for the cricket season through Sheffield Shield cricket,” selection chief George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an crucial phase in the build towards the T20 World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously get ready certain individuals for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-game ODI series against India starts on October 19 in Perth, before the opponents play five T20 internationals from 29 October.
