US Officers Launch Illegal Immigration Sweep in the City of Charlotte
Federal agents have arrived in the North Carolina city as part of President Donald Trump's expanding crackdown on undocumented immigration, according to government announcements.
The campaign, dubbed "Operation Charlotte's Web", was revealed on the weekend, with authorities stating that "illegal immigrants with criminal records" would be primary subjects in the urban area.
"We are surging immigration officers to Charlotte to maintain public safety and remove dangerous individuals," government authorities stated.
Municipal leaders, including the city's chief executive, issued a collective announcement criticising the operation, saying it was causing "needless concern and instability" in the local population.
Tactical Approach
Specialized transport and elite units could be deployed for the local operation, according to internal government documents.
Several church members performing maintenance at a local place of worship retreated to wooded areas when authorities descended, with one man being taken into custody, according to witness statements.
"We assumed the religious facility was protected and we would be undisturbed," a young bystander stated to media.
Political Context
Since Trump's return to office, national forces have been sent to various urban centers including major metropolitan areas to deliver on the pledge of "the biggest immigration enforcement effort" in US history.
The DHS said they are implementing the initiative because the state has not honoured the approximately 1,400 immigration agency individuals in custody, meaning they had been discharged due to "sanctuary policies".
Local Designation
Charlotte is not a immigration haven - cities that have regulations in place to restrict cooperation given to national immigration agencies - but it is a "designated immigrant-friendly municipality". This is a official classification for municipalities that are focused on immigrant integration.
"President Trump and Secretary [Kristi] Noem will act to safeguard US citizens when local officials won't," authorities announced.
Community Profile
Charlotte is an culturally varied community, with about seventeen percent of population being born outside of the country, according to census information.
Federal authorities has not disclosed how long the enforcement actions will continue. Chicago's crackdown, which commenced several months ago is still ongoing.
Leadership Commentary
Earlier in the week, Congresswoman Alma Adams said she was informed of the campaign and was "seriously troubled" about federal officers coming to North Carolina.
The next city on the administration's agenda is set to be New Orleans, according to reports, and that as many as two hundred officers could be dispatched to the area.
Operations in earlier locations like large metropolitan areas have faced criticism over allegations of overly aggressive tactics.

Officials said there are "various agencies prepared to help individuals seeking legal guidance on immigration matters".
